Civita di Bagnoregio – “The Dying City” | “La città che muore”!
“A golden gem dying in the Sun.”
Hey there fellow travelers, backpackers, digital nomads, and those living vicariously through travel videos and blogs!
Picking out a travel destination is not easy. Especially when you are traveling on a budget yet really want to get the most out of the experience. Worse, just when you are ready and set to use your vacation time – or simply to escape the weather right where you are – you find out that everyone else had the same brilliant idea!
And so, my selection of Civita di Bagnoregio was aimed at making sure I would spend as little as possible, see as much as possible, and not have to brush and rub shoulders with everyone else out and about in Viterbo.

Hi again!
I am Lucia. I do travel videos and blogs, and find it quite the pleasure simply describing the places I have visited, the things I have seen, dishes I have sampled, experiences I underwent, and people I have encountered.
Today, lets head over to Civita di Bagnoregio, a beautiful village / commune in the Lazio region of Italy. Civita di Bagnoregio is so romantic that it can only be accessed via a footbridge spanning a gorgeous valley. This badlands valley, Valle dei Calanchi, that is itself so wild and rugged in the light of the noonday Sun, is covered every morning in mists that make you feel you are on the bridge to heaven.
Introduction
Civita di Bagnoregio is a stunning village comune located in central Italy’s Lazio region. The ancient and isolated village sits atop a precarious volcanic plateau, offering an enchanting glimpse into medieval history simply via its location and structure. Civita di Bagnoregio is located quite the distance north of the bustling metropolitan region that is Rome at about 120 kilometers. Fortunately, it is only 10 kilometers from the city of Viterbo, and also conveniently situated near other charming destinations like Orvieto and Lake Bolsena.
Sometimes known as “La città che Muore” that is, “The Dying City” due to its eroding foundation, Civita di Bagnoregio’s timeless beauty is characterized by its narrow cobblestone streets, ancient stone buildings, and breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys.
Some of the more famous and nearby attractions include the Orvieto Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, and the picturesque Lake Bolsena, perfect for a serene day trip. The commune’s isolation, accessible only via a pedestrian bridge, has preserved its authenticity and charm, making it a haven for those seeking peace and an escape from modern life. I was captivated by the town’s tranquility, plus the warmth of its small – 16 member strong – community.
And that is to say nothing of the opportunity to experience a piece of Italy’s rich cultural heritage. It was like my visit to Civita di Bagnoregio was a journey back in time, filled with stunning vistas, delicious local cuisine, and a deep appreciation for the village’s resilience and timeless appeal.

I certainly love the idea of picking travel destinations to minimize how many others are visiting the spot. Civita di Bagnoregio looks like a great choice! Crossing a footbridge over the valley to arrive sounds perfect! And such a stunning view too. A lovely spot to add for a return visit to the Lazio region in Italy.

Lazio region indeed has so many unsung villages and towns as Rome usually overshadows them all, for a good reason, but if you plan to avoid the crowds in Rome, and you will always find, Civita di Bagnoregio is one of those places. I’ve visited trice now in all seasons, with different groups and it’s still not as crowded as most places in Italy….hopefully it stays that way 🤦♀️

Sad that Civita di Bagnoregio is eroding so badly that it is the dying city. I’ve been closeby, but never had a chance to visit. Hopefully can squeeze this in soon.

Definitely check it out when in Viterbo area or near Rome
