I currently reside in Italy and I love traveling and discovering stories all across Italy. Today I’ll be in the beautiful Eternal city of Rome, at the Bocca della verità, as the Romans say.
MOUTH OF TRUTH LEGEND | BOCCA DELLA VERITÀ | It’s legend and the Truth.
-:According to legend :-
A husband who mistrusted his wife took her to the Mouth of Truth to test her faithfulness. The Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verità) is a marble mask in Rome, Italy, which stands against the left wall of the portico of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin church, at the Piazza della Bocca della Verità, the site of the ancient Forum Boarium (the ancient cattle market).
It attracts visitors who audaciously stick their hand in the mouth. The huge legendary sculpture has;
Size: diameter is 175 cm (about 5ft 9in); thickness is 19 cm (about 7in)
Weight: about 1300 Kg
Age: about 1800 years
What does it represent: We think the Bocca della Verità probably depicts the face of the sea titan god Oceanus and it was probably (HIGHLY LIKELY IF YOU ASK MAJORITY OF THE ROMANS AROUND THE PLACE) the cover of a water collector inside one of the round Herakles temples in the Foro Boario area.
MOUTH OF TRUTH LEGEND | BOCCA DELLA VERITÀ | It’s meaning …
F is a fish
C (left and right) appear not to be horns but rather crab claws or head of dolphins;
T could be dolphins or even the testicles of the God Uranus, thrown by Kronos into the Ocean; too worn to be easily recognizable
The eyes, nostrils, and mouth are open. The sculpture was once located in the Piazza della Bocca della Veritá until 1632. It was then transferred to the outside of one of the walls of the nearby Santa María in Cosmedin, the place where it remains today. The Mouth of Truth is now known mostly for its appearance in the 1953 film Roman Holiday.
Check out my YouTube video below of the place. ENJOY!!
