TOP 15 FREE THINGS TO DO IN ROME
My mission is to see as much of Rome on a zero-budget! And I mean the top-tier! As a local, here’s the list of the free things to do in Rome, Italy.
“The good things in life are hard to come by, but the best can be free to have.”
~ Anonymous, after a gelato and aperitivo…
Roaming in Rome can be difficult for those traveling around with tight budgets and even tighter schedules. Some of Rome’s greatest attractions require pre-booking just to see, and when you throw in tickets for every booth, a few euros for a gelato and aperitivo here, a train ride, a taxi ride there, a guided tour way over there…it can all mount up to something pretty huge.
But I am not here to talk about how costly Rome can get. At the end of it all, the best things in life are not free, despite whatever that dubious quote up there says.
My mission was different; to see as much of Rome on a zero-budget. This is about getting around on foot or bicycles. Entering museums when they open for free, walking ancient public halls for free, and gazing at some of the most exquisite art, architecture, and man’s creations for free.
PS:
These selections are in no way exhaustive; I just added those I personally visited and given that you might not have enough days in Rome, these places are as good as saying you’ve been to Rome!
That being said, in case you have fewer days in Rome, use the regional trains and metros to quickly get around using the Trainline App to access all trains in Italy. The cost is €1 per use but if you are to use frequently the trains and metros, just get the daily ticket at €8 for 24 hours ( called BIRG ) and this gives you access to all trams, buses, underground metros and trains within Rome environs – which includes day trips to Viterbo, Bracciano etc. Make sure it’s written Zona 3 and ALWAYS validate the tickets before use!

I loved Rome! Unfortunately I caught COVID while there, so I didn’t get to see as much of it as I would like. Saving this list for next time!

So sorry for that Anna, I can’t imagine the stress of catching covid in another country, on holiday and all the regulations during covid! I hope your next trip you’ll relive all your Roman adventures ❤️

Thank you so much and hope you get to explore Italy someday. As for the budget, as long as you avoid the touristy places to eat and sleep, and also use public transport or choose to walk as much as possible if you can, then you can cut down a lot on the budget.

Thank you so much for this guide! My family and I are planning to go this winter, and we are figuring out what to do. This guide is perfect!

Winter is perfect time firstly its not as cold as most parts northern Europe and secondly the prices are much friendlier and not as crowded, fewer queues, except for the holiday periods.

Wow, I love Rome! This is such a detailed list, I didn’t realise there was so much free things to do… I hadn’t realised there was a market at Campo dei Fiori and I don’t think I visited the Jewish Ghetto previously. Need to head back to Rome and use your checklist!

Rome is massive if you walk away form the popular places, hopefully I’ll find time to write more on the non touristy areas of Rome. Thanks for reading through
